The Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia and former member, Central Executive and Steering Committee, of the World Council of Churches,  The Most Rev. Dr. Chibuzo Raphael Opoko, TFSG, DOB, JP, has expressed deep sorrow over the transition to glory of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, the renowned Nigerian evangelist, international preacher, and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA).

In a heartfelt condolence message made available to the media, Archbishop Opoko described Dr. Ukpai’s passing as “the home call of a general of faith whose voice thundered with the power of the Gospel across nations.”

“Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was a torchbearer of revival, a man who carried the fire of the Holy Spirit with grace, wisdom, and humility. His life was a gift to the Church, to Nigeria, and to the world,” Archbishop Opoko stated.

A Life Poured Out for the Gospel

Born in Abia State, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai devoted over six decades of his life to fiery evangelism, dynamic teaching, and prophetic demonstrations of God’s power. Through his crusades, conferences, and media broadcasts, he brought salvation, healing, and hope to millions across Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.

His messages consistently emphasized faith, forgiveness, and national unity, urging believers to look beyond divisions and embrace the transforming power of love and righteousness.

From the bustling stadium crusades of Aba and Lagos to international gospel campaigns across Africa, Europe, and North America, Dr. Ukpai’s ministry embodied relentless passion and steadfast conviction in the power of Jesus Christ to save and restore.

A Legacy That Outlives the Messenger

Archbishop Opoko hailed Dr. Ukpai as one of the “pillars of contemporary evangelism in Africa,” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of ministers and believers.

“He was more than a preacher; he was a father to many, a builder of faith, and a bridge between denominations. His ministry reminded us that the Gospel is bigger than tribe, title, or territory—it is about transforming lives through Christ,” the Archbishop added.

The Methodist Archbishop, also commended Dr. Ukpai’s unwavering commitment to national peace and interdenominational cooperation, noting that “he worked tirelessly to unite the Body of Christ across lines of doctrine and denomination.”

The Church and the Nation Mourn

Across Nigeria and the global Christian community, tributes continue to pour in for the late evangelist, whose voice once echoed in stadiums, on radio waves, and on television broadcasts.

Leaders from various denominations — Pentecostal, Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, and others — have described him as a “spiritual statesman,” “revival catalyst,” and “prophetic voice for the times.”

Archbishop Opoko noted that Dr. Ukpai’s passing marks the end of an era but the beginning of a lasting legacy.

“He lived not for himself but for the Kingdom. His voice for faith, unity, and national healing will never be forgotten,” Archbishop Opoko said.

In Abia State and across the South East, believers have gathered in local assemblies to hold vigils and thanksgiving services in honor of his impactful ministry.

A Call to Uphold His Vision

As Nigeria and the global church mourn, Archbishop Opoko urged believers to uphold Dr. Ukpai’s vision of national transformation through faith, prayer, and unity.

> “The greatest honor we can give to this great servant of God is to continue his mission—to preach Christ with conviction and to love Nigeria with compassion,” he added.

A Message of Comfort

Archbishop Opoko extended heartfelt condolences to the Uma Ukpai family, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and the entire Christian community, praying for divine comfort and strength in this moment of loss.

“May his legacy ignite in us a renewed passion for evangelism, holiness, and service. Though he rests from his labors, his voice continues to echo through the lives he touched. The Church in Nigeria has lost a prophet, but Heaven has received a faithful servant.”
