Enugu, Nigeria — A Historic Plea for Peace

In a solemn yet historic moment for the Nigerian Church and nation, leading Archbishops and Bishops of the South East—under the banner of the Fathers of Faith—have made a united, passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The open letter, dated September 15, 2025, was issued from the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Enugu, and signed by representatives of the Anglican, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, and Pentecostal communities in Igboland.

Their message is clear: this is a moment for mercy, unity, and statesmanship.

The Heart of the Appeal

The Fathers of Faith acknowledged the sensitivity of Kanu’s case, which remains before the courts and adjourned to October 10, 2025, but stressed that judicial action alone cannot heal the deep wounds of distrust and disunity in the region.

“Sometimes the logic of our common humanity must override legal arguments in the pursuit of justice,” the clerics wrote.

They offered an unreserved apology on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu, appealing to the President’s “bowels of mercy” to exercise his prerogative of compassion and direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue proceedings.

Why the Appeal Matters

The Church leaders outlined four reasons why such a move would be historic and healing:

  1. Restore Trust between the South East and the Federal Government.
  2. Quell Tensions by reducing insecurity and calming unease ahead of the October 10 court date.
  3. Advance Renewed Hope by showcasing equity and inclusion under the Tinubu administration.
  4. Strengthen Peace by enabling the clergy to guide and counsel Kanu towards a reconciliatory path.

A Cry for Compassion

The letter highlighted the heavy personal toll of Kanu’s incarceration: the loss of both parents, buried on the same day during his detention, and his deteriorating health.

They urged the President to see Kanu not just as a political agitator, but as a son of the nation who deserves another chance under guided counsel.

Voices Behind the Letter

The open letter was endorsed by some of the most respected Christian leaders in the South East:

  • Most Rev. Dr. David O.C. Onuoha – Anglican Archbishop of Owerri, Chairman.
  • Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke – Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha.
  • Most Rev. Dr. Chibuzo Raphael Opoko, TFSG, DOB, DSW, JP – Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia & Emeritus Member, World Council of Churches; Secretary General.
  • Most Rev. Prof. Ezichi Anya Ituma – Moderator, Enugu Synod of the Presbyterian Church.
  • Archbishop Goddy Okafor – Chairman Emeritus, Christian Association of Nigeria (South East Zone).

Their collective voice reflects a rare ecumenical unity, bridging denominational lines for the sake of peace and justice in Nigeria.

Conclusion: History Beckons

The Fathers of Faith reminded President Tinubu that past leaders—civilian and military alike—granted amnesty to individuals accused or convicted of treason. History, they argue, remembers not just wars fought, but peace secured.

“May your legacy be one that united Nigeria, healed wounds, and inspired renewed hope across the land.”

As the nation awaits October’s court date, their plea places the question of mercy and statesmanship squarely before Nigeria’s leader—and the watching world.
