Methodist Church Nigeria Moves Toward a New University in South East: Prelate Leads Official Visit to Umuimenyi, the Proposed Site

Umuimenyi, Bende, Abia State – The air of Umuimenyi carried both history and hope today as His Eminence, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, JP, Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, led a distinguished delegation on an official visit to the proposed site of a new Methodist University near the historic Methodist Colony, Umuimenyi, Abia State.

Accompanying the Prelate were top-ranking leaders of the church, including Rt. Rev. Dr. Babatunde Taiwo, TFG Secretary of Conference; Sir (Ide) Ifeanyichukwu Okechukwu, Conference Lay President; His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, President of Vision Africa; and bishops from the Archdiocese of Umuahia.

Also present was Prof. Udo Nwokocha, Chairman of the Committee for the Establishment of Methodist University, Umuimenyi, and immediate past University Librarian of Abia State University, Uturu.

Representing the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, was the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Enyeazu.

The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to HRH Ézè Mark Egbochuogu, Ohomire I of Lohum, alongside other traditional rulers of the host communities, strengthening ties with the custodians of land and culture.

Purpose of the Visit

This visit marks a historic milestone following the Conference Connexional Council’s approval earlier this month for the siting of another Methodist University in the South East.

In his remarks, Prelate Oliver Ali Aba highlighted Methodism’s long-standing impact on both education and spiritual development in Nigeria. He noted that the establishment of the proposed university would not only reinforce the church’s legacy but also contribute significantly to the educational, social, and economic advancement of Abia State.

“Education has always been at the heart of Methodism’s mission in Nigeria. With this proposed university in Umuimenyi, we envision a beacon of learning that will foster transformation, excellence, and growth for both the church and the people of Abia State,” the Prelate affirmed.

A Future Rooted in Faith and Growth

Strategically located near the historic Methodist Colony in Umuimenyi, the proposed institution aims to build on Methodism’s educational heritage. Its vision is to raise a new generation of leaders firmly grounded in faith, knowledge, and service.

The official visit sets the stage for further consultations with government authorities, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders to transform the vision of Methodist University, Umuimenyi into a living reality.
