Hearts Strangely Warmed: The Fire That Still Burns – Celebrating Wesley Day

Today, millions of Methodists around the world pause to remember a moment that changed everything—not just for one man, but for generations of believers. Wesley Day, celebrated annually on May 24, marks the life-altering encounter of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, whose heart was “strangely warmed” on that fateful evening in 1738.

A Moment That Sparked a Movement

At a small meeting on Aldersgate Street in London, Wesley experienced the presence of Christ in a deeply personal way. He later wrote in his journal, “I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation…” That moment became the catalyst for a revival—marked not by emotional hype or political power, but by transformed lives, deep spiritual discipline, and a renewed call to mission.

What began as a stirring in one man’s heart became a movement that would sweep through England, cross into America, and spread to the ends of the earth. And today, nearly three centuries later, the fire still burns.

Why Wesley Day Still Matters

In a world filled with distractions, compromise, and spiritual fatigue, the message of Wesley’s encounter remains more relevant than ever:

•Revival begins with one surrendered heart.

•Mission flows from deep personal transformation.

•Holiness is not a relic of the past—it’s the heartbeat of authentic Christianity.

Wesley Day is a call to remember, rekindle, and recommit. It’s not merely a historical celebration; it’s a spiritual challenge to every believer: Has your heart been strangely warmed?

Wesley’s Legacy in Us

Here at Methodist Church Nigeria Diocese of Owerri, we join hands with Methodist communities worldwide to celebrate the Aldersgate Experience. We honour the legacy of John Wesley—not just with our lips, but with our lives. On behalf of His Lordship, *The Rt. Rev. Geoffrey U. Kanu JP*, Bishop of the Diocese of Owerri, we rejoice with all Methodist faithful across our Diocese and around the world as we commemorate this sacred milestone. We remember that the gospel is still powerful, that discipleship is still possible, and that mission is still our mandate.

As we lift our voices today, we do so with burning hearts, joyful memories, and a renewed desire to see the flame of revival spread across our families, churches, and nations.

Happy Wesley Day! May your heart burn again.
